Document source description

In their original English publication in "Gavarni in London" (1849), Gavarni's illustrations accompany a different text from the French edition presented here. In the English version they are interspersed with a series of essays edited by Albert Smith (1816-60), a co-founder of the magazine "Punch," which published the work of French artists in exile in the years around 1848. This later French edition uses a text by the journalist and translator La Bédollière. In both cases, Gavarni's sketches, made from direct observation during his time in England, were considered the primary attraction of the book.
