After studying at the Düsseldorf Academy and then with his brother, Andreas, Oswald Achenbach traveled through Germany, Switzerland, and particularly Italy, refining his abilities as a landscape artist. Drawing directly from nature, he played an important part in the spread of realist landscape painting in Germany.
