Source Description

On the base of the torchère, or candlestick, is the monogram LN for (Charles) Louis Napoleon, who was elected president of France in December 1848 and became Emperor Napoleon III four years later. Barye, who identified himself as a producer of decorative works of art as well as sculpture, might have submitted this design to Joachim Visconti (1791-1853), the architect who began Napoleon III's additions to the Louvre.
