Document source description
Barye was commissioned to design a relief showing a Napoleon III on horseback dressed as a Roman emperor. The relief was installed above the Carrousel entrance to the Louvre in 1868. Two years later, after the fall of the emperor, the relief was removed; it is now preserved in the Musée nationale du château in Compiègne, outside Paris. On this sheet, Barye has traced the outlines of his design.
