Primarily a lithographer, Charlet produced more than 2,000 prints over the course of his career. Raised by his mother, an ardent admirer of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (reigned 1804-15), he specialized in military and genre scenes, particularly those glorifying the emperor's campaigns, keeping alive the "cult" of Napoleon long after the fall of the empire in 1815.
