Source Description

Depicted here in ceremonial costume is the powerful prince Abbondio Rezzonico (1742-1810), a senator of Rome and the nephew of Pope Clement XIII. The prince poses with great pomp. The avoidance of eye contact with the beholder excludes any possibility of informality; the painting was probably intended for a public setting. For more information on this painting, please see Federico Zeri's 1976 catalogue no. 417, pp. 528-529.
