Source Description
The Mon script used here is distinctive, composed in Pali, rounded in form, and quite similar to Burmese script. Mon workmanship can be identified throughout the 19th century, although their painting style was very close to the central Thai idiom. The tales depicted in this manuscript include Temi (fol. 1), Janaka (fol. 16), Sama (fol. 24), Mahosadha (fol. 33), Bhurdatta (fol. 37), Candakumara (fol. 40), Narada (fol. 50), and Vessantrara (fol. 66). The figure style and the solid color background derive from the Ayutthaya-period painting of the 18th century; the border patterns, with geometric lozenges, are characteristic of a late 18th century style in central Thaland. However the manuscript probably dates from the beginning of the 19th century.
