Document source description

This hanging lamp and its companion, no. 54.258, are made in the shape of "mosque lamps" but were unearthed in Padua in Northern Italy. The presence of four angels and a Latin inscription--AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENA DOMINUS... (Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord ...)" suggest that these were not made for the Eastern market but rather for an Italian patron that wished to honor the Virgin Mary as having given birth to the Light of the World while enjoying a touch of the exotic East.
