Source Description

In addition to representations of the Crucifixion and the Virgin, Byzantine crosses also show images of saints with specific powers. This bronze cross, which may have functioned as an altar or processional cross, depicts St. Blaise, a 4th-century physician and bishop of Sebaste (Armenia). His representation on a cross attests to the healing powers associated with him and his image.
