Document source description
When Gericault died in 1824 artworks that remained in his studio were sold. Tracings in the Walters collection suggest that Barye was able to study sketches by Gericault at this time or afterwards - some of the drawings were purchased by the artist Ary Scheffer. Gericault's work also circulated as prints, but the orientation of Barye's tracings suggest prints were not his source. Some of the tracings at the Walters have been linked to drawings now in the Art Institute Chicago.
