François-August-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) was a French statesman and author. In 1803 Napoleaon appointed him secretary of the legation in Rome, but in a pamphlet written in 1814, he gave his support to the monarchy. Chateaubriand was created peer of France in the following year and served as ambassador to Berlin, London, and Rome, and as minister of foreign affairs in 1823. He is considered one of the leading writers of the Romantic movement.
