Source Description
In the Crucifixion scene above, the Virgin is pierced by a sword emerging from the side of Christ. This is a German motif, based on the Gospel of Luke, that refers to her sufferings. Below, St. Thomas Becket (d. 1170), archbishop of Canterbury, is murdered by a group of knights as he kneels before the altar.
