The carved decoration known as "linen fold" is typical for the period and indeed looks like folded light-weight cloth.The knobs at the sides can be turned to release the back panel so that it can swing down to be used as a table. Furniture in homes around 1500 was sparse and frequently served multiple purposes. Parts have been replaced.
