Chimpanzees were popular subjects given their droll expressions. This example is similar to an agate chimpanzee with olivine eyes in the Royal Collection, London. Henry Walters purchased this carving at the Faberge headquarters in St. Petersburg in 1900. Until 1908, the Faberge firm did not have a lapidary works and relied on other sources for its carvings.
