Document source description
After the pen was cut, the ink mixed, and the paper prepared, a calligrapher had the task of cutting paper to the exact size and shape needed for a given project. A fine pair of scissors is an essential part of the writing set. Some scissors from the Islamic world were small enough to fit into a pen box, and some larger ones were made to sit on a desk. Common decorative techniques for scissors included vegetal, arabesque, and geometric incisions, often with gold inlay or overlay.
