Barras participated in the overthrow of Maximilien Robespierre, who had instituted the Reign of Terror (September 1793-July 1794), the most brutal phase if the French Revolution in which many thousands of people were executed. It was Barras, in 1795, who ordered General Bonaparte to disperse a crowd of counterrevolutionaries in Paris with cannon fire.
