A self-taught artist, Augustin established his reputation as a portrait miniaturist by exhibiting works at the Paris Salon. A number of artists soon began to list themselves as his pupils. Members of the imperial family, and, after Napoleon's fall, the Bourbon monarchs were among his sitters.
