This is a rubbing of a relief in a Buddhist cave temple. The celestial Bodhisattva (Buddha-to-be) Guanyin, "he who hears the sufferings of humankind," is shown seated holding a flaskand a willow branch, in a design attributed to the great artist Wu Daozi, who lived in the 8th century
