From the sitters costume and hair style this portrait of an unknown woman can be dated to ca. 1840. She appears to be in evening dress, with a pearl necklace and matching earrings (only one of which is visible beneath her hair), and elaborate hair ornamentation. Her black shawl has a decorative trim and she is seated on a couch.
