The banner on this pole has the crest of the Minamoto family of warriors. The most prominent branch of the Minamoto family established the Kamakura shogunate, which had military control of Japan between 1185 and 1333. The crest design depicts three gentian flowers and leaves. On the reverse, two birds are depicted in incised lines at the bottom.
