Document source description

The pupil of Federigo Madrazo and afterwards of Meissonier, Zamacois was considered the most brilliant member of Fortuny's circle after the master himself. He specialized in genre scenes that are generally set in the 17th century, with a satirical touch, and painted in vivid, sparkling colors. Comparing him to Moliere, a 19th century critic described Zamacois as "a man of wit, whose means of expression is comparable to a jeweled and dazzling weapon."
