Watch and Case with Japanese-Style Motifs
During the 18th century, because the supply of Japanese lacquer was limited to that imported to Europe by the Dutch through their base in Deshima, Japan, European craftsmen introduced japanning, a type of pseudo-lacquer made with shellac.
