Source Description
Obverse: Head of Marcus Aurelius, laureate, right. Reverse: Defeated Armenia seated on ground left, left hand on bow; vexillum (military standard) and shield to left. This is an honorific coin celebrating Lucius Verus’ capture of Artaxata, the capital of Armenia, in 163 CE as part of the larger war between Rome and the Parthian Empire. Although Verus assumed the honorific title Armeniacus in 163, Marcus Aurelius didn’t assume it until the following year.
