Document source description

This ring is composed of gold, silver collets, and an octagonal bezel on a foiled dark blue enamel ground with a galaxy of stars set with diamonds within a border, similarly set. The plain hoop expands at the shoulders. In the late 18th century and into the 19th century, marquise rings set with diamonds on dark blue or red enamel backgrounds became fashionable in Europe. The blue enamel set with diamonds evoke celestial allusions; rings of this kind were called "bagues au firmament" (Rings of the Heavens).
