Pommayrac was born in Porto Rico to French parents. In 1819 he moved with his parents to Paris. He studied with A.-J. Gros and the miniaturist Lizinka de Mirbel. He made his debut at the Salon of 1835, and received major recognition during this and the following decade. In 1852 he became Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. He painted portraits of Berlioz, Paganini, Princess Mathilde and Napoleon III. His works can be found in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris, at the Musee de Caen, and the Musee national de la cooperation franco-americaine in Blerancourt.
