Document source description
François-Joseph Talma (1788-1856) was a French tragic actor. He established the practice of appearing in historically accurate costume, not the contemporary dress of the day, and created a new method of declamation, reciting lines without undue exaggeration and in more moderate diction. Blacklisted due to his support of Napoleon, he established the Théâtre de la Republique.
