Source Description
In chapter 16 of "The Tale of Genji," one of Genji's former lovers becomes a nun to escape the unwanted attentions of a suitor. This is the basis for the "picture comparison": the lower portion of the print shows a woman with a young nun attendant, and the morning glory in a bowl at her feet alludes to the passing of one's youth. The Genji-"mon" (crest), title, illustration, and poem for the chapter appear in the upper right-hand corner of the print, enclosed by two overlapping clam shells.
