Document source description
In this North African scene, two Arab hunters pursue a lion and lioness, which, in turn, have been gnawing a fallen water buffalo. The horsemen's billowing garments add to the sense of drama. Scholars have suggested that the shallow, frieze-like quality of this sculpture was inspired by a Roman sculptural relief such as those found on the sides of a sarcophagus.
