For the composition see Walters 44.375. The Virgin holds a scroll with the first words of the prayer she addresses to Christ: "Oh most merciful Master, Lord, accept [this prayer]", etc. Christ holds a Gospel book open to the words: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden" (Matthew 11:28). Saint John's scroll reads: "Behold, the Lamb of God Who ta[kes away the sins of the world]" (John 1:29).
