    "ocrText": "No. VII.\nIn BIVOUAC NEAR THE NORTH ANNA RIVER, VA.,\nMay 24, 1864.\nDEAR MRS.\n: My last letter (a copy of which I will\nsend you, along with the others I have written from the\nfield to my several correspondents, when I return to Wash-\nton) gave an account of the way in which I \"assisted,\" as\n/\nthe French would say, at the fight between the forces of\nGeneral Warren of the 5th corps with the help of part\nof the 6th, and the rebel General Hill, on the evening\nof yesterday, the 23d inst. After our day-break breakfast\nthis morning I made my way to the hospitals, which\nhad been established while the engagement was going on,\nin an open grassy space interspersed with bushes and young\ntrees, and skirting the road which crossed the North Anna\nRiver about a mile and a quarter (I should think) ahead.\nThey consisted of a number of good sized tents spread with\npine boughs, and scattered about the grounds were the oper-\nating tables, portable dispensaries, &c. I met a number of\nthe wounded men I had helped along the night before, and\nwas glad to hear many of them express their appreciation\nof the kindness and care with which they had been attended\nto by the surgeons. These latter had been up all night, but\nthere was as yet no relaxation to their labors, for the ambu-\nlances were still coming in with the wounded. I do not\nknow that I shall have a better opportunity than the pres-\nent, and I desire therefore to record here my conviction-\nin opposition, I think, to the general impression in the\n4 L."
