Miss R. Inde Albaugh,
State Library.
Hartford, Conn.
Ay dear Miss Albaugh:
I am Hastening to reply to your letter of the 20th
which contains so much interesting information, as your so
anxfous to secure a reply concerning the financial situation
for new graduates. I have discussed this with Miss Delano
but we do not seem to be able to reach any conclusion or
solution.
The question of equipping nurses for home service has been
brought forvard a nomber of times and at present we are lowking
into the cost of such and the distribution, for it would
mean not only the equipment of the nurses who are going into
the service in the future but the nurses who are already in
the cantonment hosp itals in this country. It has been sug-
gested that we give every nurse going into home service $50.00
to be deducted from her equipment should she afterwards be sent
to foreign service. This would make an appropriation of
$250,000 for the 5000 nurses that are now in service in
We have also discussed loan funds, and the
delegation of this responsibility in individual cases, where
such loans would be required, to the committees, chapters
boards. I must frankly admit when it comes to
and hospital question practically suggest; I completely however,
the of working it out that am
at a loss for the correct solution. I would
as a temporary expedient that the 5000 nurses needed by June
be secured from the graduate body, and as such new graduates
are are able to qualify will meet their expenses, and that
the date of availability in the future for the new graduates
be placed two or three months in advance; for example, a nurse
graduating May lst might be available July lst. This would
give her two months in which to earn some money at private
nursing and probably secure a bit of a rest.
The question concerning Miss Rose M. Sheriden is
being referred to Miss Kerr of the Enrollment Department for
investigation.
Miss Delano is now working out the publicity Campaign,
and you will probably receive information from the Division
Director and the allotment for Connecticut.
