My dear Miss Noyes:-
S
I have much to ask you. Yours and Miss Delano's letters of instructions
e
along lines of ways and means of meeting the demand for 5,000 Red Cross nurses
by June first, has been received, and Connecticut stands ready to contribute
her quota, and we are wondering if you have an idea, or could give us an approximate
number that you feel we should contribute at this time. I have discussed with
other members of the Board the advisability of holding our June examination
for registration before the regular date. We stand ready to do this, or any-
thing else that this urgent demand may necessitate, but in looking over the
field we feel that we can contribute a generous number of nurses for this drive,
without having to touch our pupil body, and it seems to us that this is the
wisest plan to pursue, in view of the enormous demand that must come to us in
the future.
It will hean an active recruiting campaign, which, by the way, we
have been conducting in a moderate way in connection with our Publicity Campaign
for recruits for our training schools. Briefly, in my tour of the State for
the purpose of inspection of the training schools, we have made it a point to
reach the Alumni Associations of many of our hospitals with an appeal for
enrollment for active service. This work has been some what limited, because
of the fact that is is being carried on by our State League of Nursing Education,
instead of our State Red Cross Committee, and unfortunately it has been
necessary to handle the work with some diplomacy, because of their inactivity.
