Miss J. Beatrice Bowman, Chief Nurse,
U.S.S. Relief,
c/o Postmaster, New York City.
B
My dear Miss Bowman:
It was very interesting to receive your letter
of the 10th. I can understand your position and sympathize with
your desire to be up and doing. Knowing the difficulties, however,
that the Navy experiences in finding satisfactory Chief Nurses, I
should hesitate to advise you to give up the work. On the other
/hand, as you have served 80 many years in Government Service, would
I know be recognized as a sufficient reason for yout wishing to
take up some other form of work.
I am wondering if you have had any public health
nursing, whether you would like to take a course to prepare for this
type of work, or to prepare as an instructors in a School of Nursing?
for as you perhaps already know the Red Cross has generous scholar-
ships for these two lines of work. The only nurses that we are using
everseas at present, except in connection with the schools of nursing,
are those who are qualified to do publie health work.
There is great need at the present time in air
civilian hospitals for properly trained instructors and Training School
administrators, and there is plenty of work, hard work at that.
Yours sincerely,
Director of Nursing Service.
