F. Viola Young, Chief Nurse
Sacred Hearts Hospital

The above eleven nurses constitute the problem of replacement which
faces us after October first. The hospital census has been increasing slowly
but steadily for the past month. It has been running between fifty and sixty
for about ten days now. Just yesterday it was necessary to open up a new 48
/
bed ward to allow for the expansion of cases such as accidents, infected
surgical cases, and some medical cases. All signs indicate that we will be
busier than we have been in the past. On September 18th, when we met, Dr.
Arnold at the conclusion of the meeting dictated a letter to the local
Chapter of the A. R. C. requesting Mr. Houghton to advise the replacement, if
possible, of these eleven nurses so as to bring the Unit to the original
number of 75. He urged me to request, also, the replacements, Furthermore
the discuasion arose, in regard to whother an incr ase in the Unit might not
be necessary. He asked frankly for my opinion. At the present, judging from
the problems that are presenting themselves with the increased census, and the
awkward conditions under which we have to carry out our nursing procedures,
and due to the fact that this is an emergency hospital, calling for greater
personnel than the average hospital needs, and that we still have opened up not
our obstetrical department, it seems to ne that we should have additional
nurses, over and above these eleven replacements. An accurate estimate in regard
to the number that should be requested is difficult to make. But at this time
it seems very safe to me to advise that twenty-five more nurses could be used
in this Unit. Wahiawa Emergency Hospital has not been quite so busy as Sacred
Hearts Hospital the past month or two. At present we have two of their nurses
aiding us here.
