Davis,\nChairman of the American National Red Cross. and with it a token of\na\nthe esteem in which the heroic action of every member of the Unit\nis held.\nYou will be glad to know that a memorial fund to be used as a loan\nfund by the nurses of the American Red Cross-Harvard Unit has been\nraised by friends of Ruth Woodman Breckinridge in her memory. To\nM\nthis fund many individuals have contributed. Not only have individuals\ncontributed, but the alumnae associations of the schools of nursing\nfrom which the Harvard Unit nurses graduated. A committee has been\na\nformed to see that this fund is used by the nurses of the Unit in any\n&\nway which will promote their best professional or personal interests\na\nand give each person to whom a loan is made her best opportunity for\nprofessional growth. To borrow from the fund will be counted as an\n(\nhonor paid to the entire Unit. If there is no longer an occasion for\nthe members of the Unit to use this fund. it is understood that the\nmoney will revert to a more general American Red Cross nurse loan\nfund.\nOn September 16 of last year, Sir Wilson Jamesón. Chief Medical Officer,\nMinistry of Health, sent a letter which came to the Dean of the Harverd\nMedical School and to the Chairman of the American Red Cross expressing\nhis deep appreciation of the service which the Unit has rendered to the\npeople of Great Britain. I enclose a copy of this letter.\nThere is little more that I can add at this time except to say that\nthe spirit which prompted the nurses of the Harvard Unit, a spirit\nwhich has informed their work throughout the year's service' in England\nin war-tine, has been and will always be a source of inspiration and\nstrength to me personally. We of the Red Cross are deeply and sincerely\ngrateful that we have been privileged to have had any share in it.\nSincerely yours,\nMary Beard\nDirector, Nursing Service\nMB:BLG"
