Enclosed you will find rules and regulations for obtaining pass-

ports. You will note from these regulations that you should present
yourself before a clerk of your local U. S. District Court, unless an

Agent of the Department of State is located near you. You should take
with you the enclosed letter of appointment, two photographs and, in
a
addition, evidence of your American citizenship, and apply for a passport.
When you have your passport picture taken, you should have 12 made, 2 for
the passport and the remaining 10 for use in England. The fee of #10.00
will be reimbursed. There may be some delay in obtaining passports until

we know just what boat we will be sailing on. So do not be disturbed ir
you fail to receive yours shortly after application has been filed.

We are writing to the State Department, supporting your application

and requesting that the passport be sent to us so that we may obtain a
a
British visa for you here in Washington, after which we will return the
passport to you.
We would like to have the fo lowing information: your full name;
age; religion; name and address of your nearest relative, stating relation-
ship; and the name and address of the person or bank to wich you wish
to
have your salary paid while you are in England. Salaries will be paid
automatically the first of the month. These will be less deductions on
a drawing account for personal expenses in England. Your family will be
notified of your arrival there and it is the present intention of Harvard
University to issue a monthly report to them. Mail may be sent to the
American Red Cross Headquarters, London, England. It will be forwarded to
us from there.
With this letter is being sent a copy of the latest News Release. You
may be contacted by the press and with permission of your present employer,
it will be quite alright to discuss your appointment to the Harvard Unit.
Do not take cameras.
We regret being so indefinite about the date of sailing - February
15 still very uncertain; it probably will be four weeks later - but the
delay is due to having to wait for ships! bottom space for the hospital
and its equipment of which there are approximately 100 carloads. We
will notify you as sson as we are able, giving you rinal instructions.
