Bryant - #1535\ne\nJ.\nWe are not too hopeful that Miss Bryant is eligible for any\ncompensation because she is one of those assigned by Red Cross who\nchose not to become militarized. The Executive Secretary of the\nBuchanan County Chapter is quite correct in stating that there has\nbeen no bill passed giving retirement pensions to Red Cross nurses\nwho served in World War I. Various attempts have been made to have\nsuch a bill passed but to no avail. The only possibility of the nurse\nreceiving anything is if she was sent overseas at governnent expense,\neven though she was sent by Red Cross, and has some disability that\ncan be claimed as a result of her overseas experience. Under these\nconditions she could be eligible for compensation but not a pension.\nThere is no indication in the letter from the Home Service\nSecretary that Miss Bryant is suffering from any disability. However,\nthey may not have considered that her health condition may be a factor\nin establishing eligibility.\nWe are asking our liaison, on such matters, to review the request\njust in case something can be done.
