BUTLER\nMemo to Miss Noyes, from Miss Butler - May 26, 1924 -subject: French Commemorative Medal.\n\"I am at this time venturing to apply for the French Commemorative\nMedal, to which I believe I am entitled. My overseas record is as\nfollows:\nSailed from United States on March 8, 1918 and reported in\nthe Paris office of the American Red Cross March 20, 1918.\nOn March 27, 1918 assigned to Children's Bureau, American\nRec Cross, as Chief Nurse to Childron's Hospitals, Lyons, France.\nChief Nurse, Violet Hospital, Lyons, France - March 27, 1918\nto June 9, 1918.\nChief Nurse, Hospital Holtzman, June 9, 1918 to October 16, 1918.\nReleased from service to sail for United States, October 25, 1918.\"\n*\n*\nMemo to Mr. Fieser from Miss Noyes - December 10, 1927.\n\"In presenting this recommendation for an increase for Miss Butler -\nwhich I do with a great deal of pleasure - I have kept in mind the\nfollowing points as a basis for my request.\na. The long years of devoted service.\nb. The character of service given as well as the\nnature of the work to be performed.\nMiss Butler's service as a volunteer began long before we entered\nthe World War - as a member of our local committee and as an organizer\nand instructor in our course of Home Hygiene and Care of the Sick in\nHartford, Connecticut. During the World War she was assigned to work\nwith the Children's Bureau in France. Following the War she was in\ncharge for a time of the nursing at the Red Cross Holiday Home at\nSilver Springs. Following this, she was for a year or longer, Director\nof Nursing and Junior Red Cross for the Fourteenth Division. Transferred\nto the National Staff July 1, 1920 at a salary of $250 where she has\nserved continuously since with but one increase to $275, March 1, 1921.\nMiss Butler also serves as Secretary to the National Committee on Red Cross\nNursing Service. She is responsible for the detailed work, such as the\nevaluation of training and experience incident to the enrollment of over\n150 nurses per month; the transfer of nurses from the territory of one\ncommittee to another; and the maintenence of our Committees on an active\nbasis. When I am absent, she must assume the responsibilities of my\noffice which implies a wide knowledge of nursing in general and Red Cross\nnursing in particular.\nIt is my earnest hope that this increase, which is not without precedent\nand which does not seem excessive for the services rendered, will be granted.\""
