My dear Miss Butler:
It is a great satisfaction, indeed a delight to me, to
think that you have taken the Chairmanship of the State Committee,
and how I do wish that you were right here in Washington so that
we could all talk with you fast and furiously about all that
has happened since we saw you last.
You know very well indeed how I am feeling today for I
have just come back from one of those rather intensive speaking
tours, first to Michigan and the State Nurses' Meetings there,
later to Boston, then to Syracuse, and this week down to Danville,
Virginia. What the young student nurses need is to get a really
vivid picture of what Red Cross nurses do. I feel quite confident
that every good nurse in the country will before very many years
have passed just automatically enroll in the Red Cross, don't you?
Helen Dunn is such a comfort. She is always pulling something
out of her hat in the most casual way, and it usually proves to
be just exactly what we wanted. We got a very attractive new
chair for this office and a little occasional table, so when anyone
comes in, for instance, we can close the door and talk quietly
and in a leisurely way. Here, Helen Dunn, Virginia Dunbar and
I spend many intense half hours talking things over.
I am happy that the restatement of policy is so acceptable to
Dr. Parran and the health officers. Now we must give intelligent
publicity to the policy, and get not only understanding but
enthusiastic support for it from the executive secretaries and other
officers who are not nurses.

Marie Peterson is going to be doing enrollments for some
awn,
months and perhaps straight along. There is considerable increase
in the work of the enrollment office, and it will, I believe, be
even more heavy before the peak is reached. Gradually we are
adopting a plan more like the Children's Bureau and Public Health
