    "ocrText": "Do-170\n1823\n22766\n22766\nSeptember 11, 1918.\nEpader Calloway:\nMy doar Miss\nYour application for foreign service under the Rod Cross has boen approved by\nthe\nWar Department. The Division of Transportation will send you definite instruct-\nions concerning your date of sailing and all other necessary information, and may I\nrequest that you do not leave your home until you have received and executed these\ninstructions. This is essential if you are to secure your passport promptly.\nI am enclosing a circular of information which gives you detailed instructions\nconcerning the service. I would suggest that you secure immediately a copy of\nyour birth certificate and that you have three (3) dozen photographs made, the size\nof the head to be not more than 1 by 11/2 inches in order to fit some of the papers,\nand no hat should be worn. These photographs should cost not more than 50 cents\nto one dollar a dozen and should be secured as reasonably as possible. In the\ncities where there is frequent request for passports the regulation photographs\ncan be obtained for about this price.\nThe term of service is for the period of the War, but nurses may be released\nat\nthe expiration of one year if the reasons given for release meet with approval.\nNurses sent over under the Red Cross are expected to remain in this service and\nrequests for transfer to the military service cannot be considered.\nYou are allowed salary from date of leaving home to date on which you are\nbooked to sail. If you are held in New York after that time the additional sal-\nary will be paid in France. The salary is $70.00 a month and you may make any\nallotment you desire of this salaey before leaving this country. After sailing,\nhowever, there can be no change made in the method of payment of salaries. Forms\nfor this purpose will be sent you later by the Department of Personnel.\nAll business arrangements are made by the Bureau of Transportation whose\ninstructions you will receive, and may I repeat that you should not leave your\nhome until you have received these instructions and carried them out.\nYou should report as soon after arrival in New York as possible to Miss\nFlorence Johnson at 44 East 23rd Street. Miss Johnson is the representative of the\nNursing Service there and will see that you receive your equipment and will direct\nyou to the Division of Personnel necessary information concerning your possport\nand transportation, at 222 Four\nAvenue.\n(which will be sent later)\nFor information concerning insurance see A R C 702/\nThe nurses arriving in New York after 5 P.M. or on Saturday afternoon or\nSunday should communicate with the Central Club, 132 East 45 Street upon arrival,\nphone Murray Hill 8700, or with the Park Avenue Hotel, 32nd Street and 4th Avenue,"
