of (A (Copy) 17727 O.K. FOR To-Miss Clara D. Noyes July 22, 1919. From- Miss Fox In July 1917 the Red Cross entered into an agreement with Hindman settlement, Hindman, Kentucky, to place a Red Cross Public Health Nurse in this set- tlement, the settlement to pay $45.00 of her salary, the Red CCross to pay $30.00, making the total $75.00. This was done until August 15th, 1918 at which time the nurse resigned. The subsidy was then temporarily discontinued, as we were un- able to find another nurse willing to undertake the work at so low a salary. On July lst, 1919, Miss Dora Carothers was appointed by the Red Cross to this position. Hindman settlement is unable to increase their share of her salary, which they agree is insufficient The work in this settlement which is also for the mountaineers is very valuable work and demands the services of a thoroughly well traincd and intelligent Public Health Nurse. We have secured such a nurse in Miss Carothers but we feel that her salary must be increased, if we are to retain her services. We. therefore, recommend that in renewing the subsidy for the salary of this nurse, the Red Cross increase it and paymonthly $45.00 making the total salary $90.00. As living expenses at Hindman are con- siderably less than they are at White Rock and as this nurse has not been in service there as has the nurse at White Rock, we are recommending that her salary should be $90.00 although we are recommending $100.00 for the White Rock salary. Respectfully submitted, e/h 2
