July 21, 1941. Mrs. Dunbar F. Carpenter, 18 Ravine Road, Winchester, Mass. My dear Mrs. Carpent er: The Chairmen of the Red Cross, Honorable Norman H. Davis, has esked me to send you the following message from the British Minister of Health, Mr. Ernest Brown: RI am greatly distressed that some of the nurses who were coming over to help us under the auspices of the American Red Cross have not yet been accounted for efter the barbarous attacks on the ships in which they were coossing the Atlantic. If the fears for their safety should unhappily be confirmed the loss will be great both to you and to use Their sacrifice can never be forgotten. I should be glad if you would express my deepest sympathy with all concerned on your side, We are very glad to see the nurses who were rescued and have now arrived in this country and are full of admiration at the courage with which they have faced their bitter ordeal." Sincerely yours, Mary Beard, Director, Nursing Service.
