C attant + at M Mr. Fieser June 8,1938 Miss Butler lace Mr. Hughes F. c Miss Ronsaville advised me that Congressman Dockweiler was friends F I telephoned today to the office of Congressmen Dockweiler, speaking to his secretary, Miss May Ronsaville. in California; that he was not seeking reelection but in- tended to run for Governor of the State. I explained to her that we traditionally took no stand in legislation pending before Congress and added that I believed that the Congressman would wish to consider the fact that the Red Cross had in its overseas service not only the group of 600 nurses, covered by his letter to Miss Butler of May 4th, but also approximately 9400 other men and women engeged in the verious war time activities of the Red Cross in France end other foreign lands; that if legis- lation were contemplated for the benefit of the nurse group, it would undoubtedly be appropriate to make it effective for f. this larger group as well. I also pointed out that if such legislation were enacted in favor of Red Cross personnel, the question might likely be raised as to what legislation would then follow for the benefit of those who had served the Salvation Army, Y.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., Knights of Columbus and other similar organizations in France. Miss Ronsaville stated that in all probability Con- gress would adjourn within a few days and there was no like- lihood of the enactment of any new legislation at this session. She stated she would make e note on their records of the information I had supplied and believed it would not be necessary to make further reply to Congressman Dockweiler's letter of May 4th. H. J.
