Stone, Executive Director\nThe American National Red Cross\n1400 Central Avenue\nMemphis, Tennessee\n38104\nDear Mr. Stone:\nToday I learned that one of our most loyal and enthusiastic\nmembers is being nominated for an award for her outstanding service\nin the American National Red Cross.\nAltrusa Club of Memphis was indeed fortunate in 1964 when Mrs.\nLucille Childress accepted membership in its service club. She\nhas served on the board of directors, as well as secretary and\nvice-president. As vice-president, she was also program coordi-\nnator and director of the four major committees in planning and\nexecuting the year's activities.\nOn a smaller scale Mrs. Childress has served as chairman on the\nmajor committees, and I can speak from experience when I say that\nthe most enlightening year was when I was placed on her committee\nfor Altrusa Information. Her plans for programs were well studied,\norganized, and executed to perfection. She commanded the respect\nand cooperation of the committee, and our group was able to make\noutstanding contributions of service.\nHer ability to lead and direct are best exemplified in a crisis in\n1967 when a death in the president's family prevented her presiding\nat our golden anniversary celebration. Mrs. Childress presided\nwith only a few hours' notice at the dinner meeting where many\ncivic leaders in Memphis were present.\nNeedless to say, when I was given the honor of serving as president,\nit was Mrs. Childress, whom I admired and respected, that I asked\nto install me and the other officers.\nAltrusa Club will be justly proud of its member if she brings honors\nto American National Red Cross.\nSincerely yours,\nEffice H.
