A basic plan was adopted to place the adult courses and school courses under

separate supervision. Goals were set and plans formulated in a two-fold effort
e
to make the service more productive. It was also decided that two project
folders be established to provide a written record of progress made. Each folder
was to show (1) objectives, (2) actions necessary, and (3) actions taken. The
results of this action were spectacular, as measured in the Annual Operations
Analysis from National Headquarters. On the average Group I Chapters, for each
hundred thousand people in the chapter territories, conducted 9.4 courses and issued
200 certificates, mostly for successful completion of courses in Care of Sick and
Injured and Mother and Baby Care. Memphis, for each hundred thousand people in
its territory, conducted 40.3 courses and issued 1,314 certificates. About six
and one-half times the average. These accomplishments were the direct result of
organized planning and hard work, coupled with the active cooperation of outside
agencies, particularly the Boards of Education of Memphis and Shelby County.
During the years 1966-67, 140 certificates per 100,000 population were issued.
This figure is the highest attained in the Nation for that year. These figures
have continued to grow throughout the years. National Headquarters asked Mrs.
Childress to submit the plan of action used to achieve this accomplishment,
which she did, and this report has been shared with chapters over the United States.
In 1967 Mrs. Childress and three other nurses from the various areas in
the United States were called to National Headquarters in Washington to revise
the Red Cross Home Nursing Instructor's Guide.
In working with the adult group, Mrs. Childress has given many hours of
concentrated time and effort with mothers on Welfare who are taking Home Nursing
Courses offered by the Memphis Area Chapter. Those who show a desire and capability
