The nurses if possible, should carry a reserve fund of at least $100.00
instead of the $50.00 mentioned in the circular. Mr. Holland of the Ameriran
Red Cross 222-4th Ave. New York City, will be glad to advise you and to suggest
to you the best method of carrying this money and the amount of French money you
should carry.
All Business armangements are made by Dr. Babcock of the Division of
Transportation who will send you instructions, and may I repeat that you should
not leave your home until you have received his instructions and carried them out.
You should report three (3) days before the designated date of sailing
to Miss Florence Johnson at 44 East 23rd St. New York City. Miss Johnson is the
representative of the Nursing Service there, and will see that you receive your
equipment and have all necessary information concerning your passport and trans-
por tation.
Tie hope soon to have plans completed for the nurses serving under the
Red Cross to receive a certain insurance with the privelege of securing addition-
al insurance if they so desire at the regulation rates. If you have sailed for
France before this plan is completed, information and insurance will be granted
to you in France, and if you have not sailed you will receive full information
here before you sail.
The nurses arriving in New York for service under the Red Cross should
bring a sworn statement from someone who has known her for two years as a letter
of indentification in case she has no friends in New York to identify her at the
passport bureau.
The nurses arriving in New York after 5 P. M. or on Saturday af ternoon
or Sunday should communicate with the Central Club, 132 East 43rd St. upon arri-
val, phone Murray Hill 8700, or with the Park Ave. Hotel, 32nd St. and 4th Ave.
Murray Hill 3500 in order to make arrangements for board. They will be well taken
care of at either of these places until the office is opened.
One nurse of each group is selected as Head Nurse for the trip and until
the group arrives in Paris and reports to the Representative of the Nursing Service
Miss Julia Stimson, at 4 Place de la Concorde, Paris. This nurse is also in charge
of any Nurses Aids who may sail on the same ship. A list of the nurses expected
to sail in the group is sent to her before the sailing date and she meets all those
sailing at 44 East 23rd St.
Nurses going over under the Red Cross must understand that we on this
side cannot promise a definite position to any one nurse. We can and do send a
letter to our representative stating the experience of each nurse and suggesting
the form of service to which she is assigned, but with the changeing situation in
France from day to day it would not be possible for us to do other than this and
the nurses are assigned under the direction and at the discretion of our represen-
tative there and are expected to accept the assignment given them without dissat-
isfaction.
We have received a recent ruling from the State Department that women
with brothers in the service cannot be sent to France. Therefore if you have
a
brother in the service, it will not be possible for you to secure a passport. We
are endeavoring to have this ruling modified in favor of nurses, but as yet have
not succeeded, so if you have a brother in the service we will notify you as soon
as we have definite information.
Very truly yours,
LM-M
Director, Bureau of Field
Nursing Service.
