November Twenty Seventh 1 9 2 3 Miss Ella P. Crandall Amerigan Thild Herlth Association 370 Seventh Ave New York City My dear Miss Crandall You will remember my telling you that the Lengue of Red Cross Societi es had expressed a desire that whatever American nurse was appointed on the Nursing Advisory Committee of the League should spend four months with the League previous to the meeting of the com- mittee in April. Sir Claude stated that he would especially like to have either you or me and explained the situation as follows: "Would it he possible, if ither of these two nurses could be sppointed, for the one selected to come over to Europe to work with us here in the Les gue and to study our methods for a period of say four months, from January to April? This may seem an unrensonable request but it is actuated by the fact that the very henvy development of the work in the Nursing Division has made it almost impossible for the available personnel to grapple with the task of pr eparing publications, literature, etc., as well as of fulfilling visiting engagements, which is such an important part of Miss Olmsted's work. The small staff at present sanctioned for the division struggles manfully but finds difficulty in giving adequate time to prepare definite educational plans for the promotion of public health nursing internstionally. The help and advice even temporarily of either Miss Crandall or Miss Fox in this direction would, as I am sure you vi 11 agree, prove invalua ble. It would incidentally have the great advantage of enabling your selec- o.K. tion to familiarise herself completely before the first meeting of the yor PALONA NursingAdvisory Committee with the methods and objectives of the Lengue's R Division of Nursing. "I am aware that in making this suggestion I am asking for a very great deal. I am able, however, owing to the economies which we have found possible during the last nine months, to finance such a visit and stay at the League from the budget allotments of the current year, and if it were possible for either of the ladies mentioned to spend four months with us, I would propose to pay her traveling expenses both ways and give her a salary equivalent to that drawn by Miss Olmsted, namely, $315. I believe that this salary is less than what they are drawing at present, but you will appreciate my difficulty in offering more. At the same time, I want to make it abundantly clear that Miss Crandall or Miss Fox would not be the subordinate of Miss Olmsted in the Nursing Divi-
