9 S L eT a February 11, 194,2 a L Mias Verda Violet Cummings 930 N.W. 20th Avenue Portland, Oregon My dear Miss Cummings: + have just been advised by Washington that the definite date of sailing is not known, but that immediate prospects are unlikely. We realize that this information is a disappointment to you, as it is to us; but, on the other hand, we are confident that you can well understand that with the rapid develoyments in the War zone, the Government mast use all available transportation for troops and personnel of the military forces. It is not possible for us to predict when the War Department can arrange for our sailing, but there may be a delay of approximately two months. For this reason, we should like to hear from you at your carliest convenience whether you wish to have us keep your name on the list, or have it withdrawn. If the former, it would be necessary for you to arrange with your employer for your release as soon as word is recoived that transporta- tion has been arranged. In that case, you should keep the travelers checks which you have, but understand, of course, that none of them can be used until you actually purchase your railroad ticket to San Francisco, or port of embarkation. If you decide to have your name withdrawn, the sub-advance should be returned, but you will receive instructions later about how to convert the travelers checks. Again, may we say how much we regret this delay, but we are confi- dent that you will accept this news in the same fine spirit which prompted you to answer the call. Cordially yours, (Miss) Gladyee L. Badger Director, Nursing Service Pacifie Area, A.R.C.
