e Epi January 33, 1918. Miss Della DeGraw, Kingston Avenue Hospital, Brooklyn, N. Y. My dear Mies DeGrow: I have wired you today asking you to send three nurses for the meningitis at Alexandria, Louisiana. There is no immediate prospect of foreign service, and the department of Nursing feels thayy strongly that particularly in an emergency the nurses in this country should be willing to serve. It might be possible that nurses who serve with the epidemic would be relieved later for foweign service, but it is quite certain that murses who definitely decline service in this country will not be assigned to foreign service.. There is a greta emergency at Alexandria, and murses are urgently needed. I have been able to secure one substitute, but the names of the nurses mentioned in your letter were sent to the Bureau of Sanitary Service as having been directed to report at Alex- andria. Their failure to do so places the Red Cross in a very embarrassing position. I will be glad to hear from you further upon the subject. Thanking you for your interest and awaiting your reply, I am, Yours sincerely, Director, Department of Mursing. LM/A N W
