BRANCH OFFICE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS N. to AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS JANLS 1919 INTER-OFFICE LETTER To Mr. W. D. Smith New YORK, Date January 13, 1919 From Miss M. L. Draper Subject Miss Jane A. Delano Mr. Lord has referred to me your letter in regard to Miss Delano, as he has no personal knowledge of the case. Miss Delano's passport arrangements were completed in this office, everything being in good order, and Miss Delano took her passport to have it visaed by the French and British Consulates. This office heard absolutely nothing further from Miss Delano before her departure. Shortly before Miss Delano sailed, I was personally informed, as an amusing incident, & foutside of the office, that Miss the service Delano had of the been Y. M. C. A., but that she had arranged the transferred by the British Consulate to matter satisfactorily. On inquiry to Miss Johnson of the Nursing Bureau, I learned that Miss Delano, having left her passport for the necessary investigation at the British Con- sulate, was informed a couple of days later that as the Red Cross was no longer sending people abroad, the British officials had changed the passport and had returned it visaed to the Y. M. C. A. office. How this was possible in view of the fact that Miss Delano had the usual letter of recommendation from us to the Consulate, I do not know, but as I have said above, Miss Delano arranged matters with- out further reference to this office. mid MLD T
